Use Twitter to Gather Recommendations and Testimonials

Twitter Tip: Great Idea

Do you ever wish that you could get more recommendations from other people, especially when you KNOW that you've earned them?

I read an idea that makes things SO much easier...using Twitter.  Stay with me!

The Tao of Twitter is a book written by Mark W. Schaefer, and it does a great job of giving Twitter tips and emphasizing the importance of using social media "socially," not simply as blatant advertising.

I got this idea from a book that I am reading,  "The Tao of Twitter: Changing Your Life and Business 140 Characters at a Time" by Mark W. Schaefer.



You know how LinkedIn has recommendations?  That is one of the separating features of LinkedIn, and it still is.

However, did you know that you could sort of "rig up" something similar on Twitter?

Anytime someone Tweets you a compliment (on Twitter), you can choose to make that Tweet your "Favorite" Tweet.  You can collect a whole bunch of "Favorites" that just happen to be a collection of compliments, a la Tweeted testimonials.

Here is an example of the type of Tweet you might want to make a "Favorite" Tweet. Click on "Favorite" to put it into your "Favorites" folder.

Within Twitter, you can send people to your Favorites folder within your profile.  Within that folder, you can showcase all of the compliments and recommendations other people Tweeted about you.

(NOTE: As of the time I am writing this, I have not done this.  I just read the tip this morning.)

There are many reasons why many people do not give you LinkedIn Recommendations, even when you deserve them:

• They don't know how to write a recommendation.
• They don't have time to write a recommendation.
• They are not sure that you would appreciate a recommendation.
• They are not sure what to say/write.
• They have a short memory about what you did for them.
• They are not confident in their writing.
• They are too lazy to write a recommendation.

There are probably other reasons, but that should cover most people's reasons (or excuses).

However, how often do we get (or give) a flippant compliment on Twitter?  How hard is it to give someone a compliment within 140 characters?

Chances are pretty good that you've been overlooking this opportunity.  I know that I have.
