Using Social Media Marketing (SMM) to Prepare in Advance of a Pink Slip



Social Media Marketing (SMM) can help save us when we really need it.

Nobody enjoys getting the "pink slip" letting us know that we lost our job, our form of financial security, but there are things that we can--in advance and ONLINE--to improve our chances of surviving it gracefully.

This post was inspired by the blog post, "The Dreaded Pink Slip Part II - How to Deal with It" by Subhorup Dasgupta.

Within this post, Subhorup gave some good advice on things to do OFFLINE, including building a rainy day savings fund, in case we cannot find work quickly.

How can Social Media Marketing (SMM) help us here?



Social Media Marketing (SMM) is a perfect place to build relationships in advance.

Essentially, people tend to hire people (or businesses) they know over people (or businesses) that they do NOT know, especially if the person doing the hiring is pretty sure that the one they know will work well within their organization.

You can remind people you already know about what skills you have.

Social Media Marketing makes it efficient to blast to everyone you know that you need a job.

It is even more effective if you have taken time to work with people within your network.  It is important to personalize your messages to people, though.  Don't keep post-blasting that you need work.  The people who care about you already know that and remember, and they don't need a reminder.  The other people don't really care, and you're wasting your time and their time.

This is also a good time to contribute insightful material for people.  See if people need help getting information to do their current work.  If you help make these people's lives easier--and do it often enough, it won't be long before they will want to have access to you every day.

Notify the mass of people about your situation, and remind them of your value through your actions--not begging.

You can meet new people and show them your skills.

There is a good chance that you have met the person who will lead you to your next job.  At least, you just have not met this person, yet, and they have not met you.

Most social media platforms offer Groups.  Some groups have more happening within them than other groups, but you can (usually) join these groups for free.

Similar to the advice I gave for handling people within your current network, you simply do many things, but they fall into one (1) of two (2) categories:
  1. Broadcast generally helpful tips
  2. Find people who have questions and answer them
It is likely that you have some skills that are weaker for other people, if they have them at all.

Look for people who need help with these things.

I am not encouraging that you do favors for people and expect anything in return.  However, if you do enough favors for enough people, you will be in demand--somewhere.  I guarantee that!

I hope that you never need to execute the pink slip recovery plan.  However, even if you never get fired, these are still good steps to take--both online and offline.

It's just cheaper to use Social Media Marketing platforms (like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, etc.) to find people that you can help.  Lots of people need your help.  You just need to take the time and effort to find the right opportunities.

You never know when you'll need a favor, even if it is not asking anyone for a job.

As one of my favorite business author, Harvey Mackay often says, you should "dig your well BEFORE you're thirsty."

The next best thing is just to start digging your well--in places you know AND in places that you don't know.
